Description

There is a particular moment in the making of a painting when the figure stops being something you are building and becomes someone you are meeting. That is what happened here. She arrived fully formed in her own authority, not because she was painted to impress, but because she had already decided she was done asking for permission.

Be Forever Free is built the way all honest things are built, through layers. The mixed media beneath carries the texture of everything she has moved through, the roughness and the tenderness, the history that does not disappear but becomes part of the foundation. Over that, the oil goes down in strokes that do not apologise for themselves. The palette moves between fire and something quieter, a warmth that does not burn but glows, because that is the truth of a woman who has found her own ground. She is vivid. She is visible. She is not performing either of those things.

What I find most moving about her is the absence of hesitation. Not the absence of feeling, she holds a great deal of feeling, but the absence of the internal negotiation that so many of us spend our lives conducting with ourselves. The question of whether we are too much or not enough. The careful measuring of how much space we are allowed to occupy. She has stopped doing that. Completely. And something in that stillness, that utter settledness in her own colour, is one of the most quietly radical things I have ever managed to put onto a canvas.

She belongs to the Limitless Women universe as a portrait of the identity that lives on the other side of all that measuring. The one we catch glimpses of in our best moments, when we are moving through a room without thinking about how we look moving through it, when we are speaking without editing ourselves mid-sentence, when we feel, for just a stretch of time, entirely free. This painting holds that feeling still. It does not let it pass.

Be Forever Free is for the collector who knows exactly what that freedom tastes like, and who wants it on her wall as a daily reminder that it was never something she had to earn.
