Description
Native Nigerians is a tribute to the resilience, dignity, and visual poetry of indigenous life across Nigeria’s diverse ethnic landscapes. As an artist working in relief sculpture, I seek to immortalize the gestures, tools, and textures of everyday existence—whether in the village square, on a fishing canoe, or in the quiet labor of trade.
Each figure and object in this piece reflects a story: stories of survival, of interdependence, of belonging. Carved with deliberate simplicity, the forms are meant to echo the sculptural traditions of our ancestors, while inviting new interpretations in a contemporary world. I work to create not just images, but vessels of memory—where culture lives on through surface, form, and meaning.
This masterpiece invites viewers into a rich visual narrative of indigenous identity. Through carved forms, the artwork presents a dignified portrayal of Nigeria’s native peoples—not as exoticized figures, but as bearers of deep-rooted knowledge, cultural pride, and everyday beauty.
It engages with visual languages that speak of subsistence, spiritual connection, and intergenerational resilience. By rendering these themes in relief—where figures literally emerge from their background—Ekemmiri evokes the way these communities rise continually from the margins into visibility.
Native Nigerians does not simply depict cultural life; it preserves and reclaims it, challenging audiences to reconsider what is native, what is valuable, and what must endure.
The art is made of filler and elements of resins. They are sculptural works made for decorating and study.
