Description
This painting was inspired by an asylum seeker student who said that he spent his best moments with me in the classroom.
Asylum seekers sometimes have difficulties integrating into a strange new country. Many come from war so are deeply traumatised. They are so happy to receive any outward signs of compassion and kindness. They are appreciative of learning environments where they feel respected and empowered.
Paulo Friere, a Brazilian educator and philosopher, said that education was a liberating, dialogical process that transforms learners into active agents of social change. Teachers and students co-create knowledge through inquiry and shared real-world experiences.
