Description
This watercolour captures a deeply personal moment on the Sandstone Trail, as I passed the dramatic ruins of Mow Cop Castle at sunrise after setting out from Kidsgrove in the early hours of the morning. Perched on rugged rock outcrops, the historic folly emerged from the dawn light like a vision from another age, marking the beginning of what was, at that time, the longest distance I had ever attempted to walk in a single day.
Bathed in the soft glow of a new day, the scene is painted with delicate washes of golden yellows, pale blues, gentle greys, and fresh spring greens. The warm sunrise sky contrasts beautifully with the weathered stone ruins, while the winding path draws the eye towards the lone hiker, conveying both the scale of the landscape and the excitement of the journey ahead.
Using the expressive qualities of watercolour, layers of transparent washes create an atmosphere of light, distance, and movement. Wet-on-wet techniques soften the clouds and morning sky, while finer brushwork brings definition to the castle ruins and rocky hillside. The fluidity of the medium mirrors the ever-changing light and the sense of adventure that comes with walking through open countryside.
For hikers, this painting celebrates the anticipation felt at the start of a long-distance trail—the promise of miles yet to come, rich with nature, history, and discovery. For art lovers, it captures a fleeting moment of dawn through the luminous transparency and subtle colour transitions that make watercolour such a captivating medium.
More than a landscape, this painting is a memory of achievement, wonder, and possibility. It commemorates my first major endurance walk and one of the most inspiring sights along the route—a sunrise encounter with Mow Cop Castle that remains my favourite view from the entire journey.
