Butterfly is an original charcoal drawing exploring the quiet intimacy, vulnerability and strength of the human form.

Working with expressive, instinctive marks, James Shipton allows the figure to emerge from layers of soft tonal shading and more decisive charcoal lines. Areas of detail dissolve into the surrounding paper, giving the work a sense of movement and impermanence — as though the figure has been captured during a fleeting, private moment.

The title Butterfly reflects this feeling of transformation and delicacy. There is a fragility within the image, but also confidence and freedom; the body is not presented simply as a subject to be observed, but as an expression of emotion, identity and human experience.

Shipton’s background and fascination with human anatomy are evident in the understanding of proportion and form, yet the drawing deliberately moves beyond anatomical accuracy. Gesture, atmosphere and emotion become equally important, creating a work that feels both contemporary and timeless.

Executed entirely in charcoal on paper, the restricted monochrome palette places emphasis on light, shadow, texture and the physical act of drawing.
