Looking East Oil

I painted this tree as it stands at the edge of my village, looking east across open fields. It is a familiar landmark for me, quietly holding its place in the landscape as the light and weather constantly shift around it. I was drawn to the strength of its leaning form and the delicate lines of its bare branches set against the open sky.

The painting is built through layered oil paint, with soft washes of yellow, blue, and violet creating a luminous, atmospheric sky. In contrast, the darker structure of the tree anchors the composition, while the foreground is loosely suggested with textured, expressive marks that evoke grasses, water, and earth rather than describing them in detail.

Painted with professional-quality oil paints, the surface is finished with a light matte varnish to enrich the colours and provide lasting protection.
