Description
This is a painting done in my local village of St John's. The village grew up around the canal being cut to link london with Southampton in the c18. The canal only got as far as Basingstoke, hence the name, and then came the railways and the canal was made obsolete. There was a long period of deterioration, when the canal dried up and lock gates rotted, but finally in the 1980s, enthusiasts revived the canal to its current glory. It is used for recreational barge traffic and is also a haven for wild life
The bridge over the canal in my painting, records the fact that bricks were made at intervals for use in building the canal.
St John's Village takes its name from the church built specifically as a chapel of ease for the villagers, by the rector of Old Woking
Walking back across the bridge one fine winter's morning, I was dazzled by the low sun, and thought I would try and capture the light. I will let others judge
