THAMES SAILING BARGES IN THE MOONLIGHT Oil

A smallish original oil on linen canvas painting (16 x 16 inches plus frame) that captures the character of these barges that were once an important method of cargo transport in the south east of the UK. They were shallow drafted and capable of sailing in the rivers and estuaries as well as the open sea. There are quite a few, mostly restored still in existence today. I have spent time on these boats and painted them many times.

The painting technique is realistic with just a hint of impressionism in the brushwork whilst retaining detail.
