Description
Late Night — Original Painting by James Shipton
Late Night captures the intimacy and stillness of those hours when the outside world has quietened and we are left alone with ourselves.
The female figure emerges through expressive layers of oil and acrylic, her form suggested rather than precisely defined. I wanted the painting to feel spontaneous and instinctive — as though we are witnessing a private, unguarded moment rather than a deliberately posed figure.
There is a sensuality within the work, but it is deliberately understated. For me, the female form is as much about emotion, gesture and vulnerability as it is physical beauty. The positioning of the body, the curve of the back and the looseness of the surrounding marks create a feeling of solitude and contemplation.
My background in medical science and study of human anatomy continues to influence the way I approach figurative painting. I understand the structure beneath the figure, but rather than reproducing anatomy literally, I allow paint, movement and instinct to take over.
The title Late Night reflects that sense of being caught between wakefulness and sleep — a quiet moment when the performance of the day has disappeared and something more private and honest remains.
Created using acrylic and oil on canvas, Late Night is a one-of-a-kind original artwork measuring 61 × 81 cm.
