Description
Dame Primrose Pugaton, Dowager of Pugaton Abbey is an original contemporary animal portrait by British artist Samantha Biddle, combining expressive realism, humour and storytelling.
Draped in pearls, extravagant pink feathers and an enormous flower-covered hat, Dame Primrose is no ordinary pug. She is a woman who has reached a certain age and decided she will no longer make herself smaller, quieter or more agreeable simply to make everybody else comfortable.
She speaks plainly. She dresses boldly. She has opinions and, more importantly, has stopped apologising for having them.
Inspired by the wonderfully sharp-tongued grande dames of British period drama and the rebellious spirit behind the idea of growing older and finally choosing to “wear purple”, Dame Primrose celebrates the freedom that can arrive with age. She represents the woman who becomes more herself rather than less, who stops asking permission to take up space and discovers the courage to be seen exactly as she is.
There is humour in her expression, but underneath it is something more meaningful.
For Samantha, the character also carries a personal connection. The poem about growing older, wearing purple and behaving with increasing freedom was something her mother shared with her while she was growing up. That spirit of joyful rebellion became part of Dame Primrose’s story.
Her pearls, spectacles, flamboyant hat and beautifully theatrical plumage give the painting the grandeur of a traditional aristocratic portrait, but the subject turns that tradition delightfully on its head.
Dame Primrose belongs to Samantha Biddle’s ongoing The Pink List collection, a cast of distinctive animal characters whose colourful appearances conceal deeper stories about individuality, courage, belonging and refusing to become whatever the world expects of you.
Painted with rich layers of colour, expressive mark-making and fine detail, the work combines dark, atmospheric tones with vivid pink, purple and rose. The small china teacup completes the portrait of a formidable Dowager who appears to have stopped for tea only because civilisation requires it.
This original pug painting would make a striking statement piece for collectors of contemporary animal art, dog art, British contemporary painting and character-led figurative artwork.
Dame Primrose is not growing old quietly.
She has simply reached the glorious point where she no longer sees any reason to.
