Description
Stella Philomena Potts is an original contemporary flamingo portrait from Samantha Biddle’s ongoing Pink List collection, a character-led series exploring glamour, stereotype and the strange assumptions we make about people simply because of how they appear.
Stella is impossible to overlook.
Rendered in vivid pink, magenta, turquoise and deep jewel tones, her oversized teal glasses and composed expression give her the air of someone who has already noticed the thing everyone else missed.
And she probably has.
Within The Pink List, Stella is a private investigator and fixer. She is observant, controlled and relentlessly principled, the person called when somebody has been misjudged, quietly pushed aside or turned into the convenient villain of somebody else’s story.
She does not make dramatic entrances or heroic speeches. Stella prefers evidence, timing and the occasional well-placed introduction.
Her particular irritation is injustice.
She understands that people who look, behave or think outside accepted social norms are often judged before anyone has bothered to understand them. Stella’s purpose within The Pink List is to correct that imbalance, usually without the room noticing she has done it.
There is humour beneath the glamour too. Flamingos are naturally conspicuous creatures, yet Stella would much rather observe than be observed. She is exquisitely controlled, unmistakably pink and therefore doomed to be noticed wherever she goes.
That contradiction sits at the heart of the painting.
Created at 100 × 120 cm, Stella has real physical presence. She works beautifully as a statement piece in a contemporary, eclectic or colour-led interior, particularly in a living room, dining room or large hallway where her saturated pinks and turquoise details can command the space.
This painting forms part of The Pink List, Samantha Biddle’s portrait series in defiance of aesthetic profiling.
Not guilty of anything but looking too damn good.
