The Crashing Sea Oil

On my visit to Italy, one moonlit night under running clouds I was struck by the image of the white, foaming crashing waves against a rock, jutting out of the water. The contrast of the white spray against the dark sea, the sound it made and the dramatic scene inspired me to produce this painting, which not only depicts the scene but also the feeling of awe it gave me which I hope the viewer can feel as well. I used layer upon layer of thin paint to create depth and illumination.
