Description
Monarch Butterfly
60 by 60 cm Mixed Media on framed canvas.
As an artist I find no interest in photographic realism, I embrace a contemporary expressive language allowing colour and texture to carry as much meaning as the subject itself. So when I realised I had not studied the butterfly in any detail it became a challenge.
The composition is immediately compelling. The butterfly is positioned diagonally across the canvas, creating a dynamic sense of movement while maintaining an elegant balance. Its wings appear suspended in a moment of effortless flight, drawing the viewer's eye from one richly articulated form to the next. This diagonal orientation prevents the image from feeling static, lending the work both energy and grace.
The vibrant oranges and warm golds of the butterfly create a striking counterpoint to the luminous blue-green and emerald background. This complementary relationship intensifies the visual impact, allowing the butterfly to radiate from the surface as though illuminated from within. The halo of yellow surrounding the body further reinforces this effect, suggesting light, vitality, and transformation.
I used a layered mixed media surface—with visible cracks, textured passages, translucent glazes, and expressive mark-making—adds a tactile richness that rewards prolonged viewing.
