Postage Stamp Collage
Magritte often painted stiffly posed men wearing bowler hats who showed no expression or emotion, which in many ways suits this postage stamp collage. ‘Apple and Three Bottles’ depicts an anonymous character in a Surrealist style utilizing his ‘Painted Bottles’ (1959) representing the brittle glass bottle much like used postage stamps as automated objects. These bottles however breathe life with a rising sun and a stormy crescent mooned night in contrast to a graphic still life image of the apple. (This picture is created from 87% used postage stamps and 13% acrylic paint.
