Description

The photograph, taken on a cold January evening in 2020 features Battersea Power station in the early stages of its most recent makeover. The construction of this coalfired power station, standing on the South bank of the Thames started life in the 1930’s and continued through until. 1955 when the two stages, Battersea A and B were completed.

It featured most famously on the album cover of Pink Floyd’s 1975 album, entitled Animals. A flying, helium filled pig was tethered to the site and hovered above the station until it broke free and took off over London. It reached 30,00 feet, was reported by airline pilots and finally came to rest on a farm in Kent. More recently and in a blaze of publicity the latest incarnation of Battersea emerged in October 2022. when the public were admitted to the newly finished project to enjoy a range of bars, restaurants and shops.
