Description

Title: Woodhorn Colliery – Ashington, Northumberland

The image was taken on a gloomy day in May 1998 and captures the sad remains of a booming industry whose closure had a devastating impact on local communities and industry. Coal production at the colliery was greatly reduced during the 1970’s and drew to a close in 1981. The Pit wheels and winding engines (pictured here) finally closed the winter of 1986 and the Woodhorn site is now a mining museum and well worth a visit.
