Brandusa Draghici
London
I am a London-based painter whose practice explores symbolic and psychological landscapes, often drawing on myth, folklore, and personal narratives to examine the tensions between labour, identity, and artistic creation. My work tends to unfold through allegorical compositions, where objects and figures carry emotional and conceptual weight.
The paintings presented here are selected works from earlier bodies of work. While they remain important to my development as an artist, they sit outside of my current series and ongoing research. This selection offers an opportunity to acquire pieces that trace the evolution of my visual language and thematic concerns at a more accessible stage in my practice.
Artistic background
Brandusa D is a painter whose work explores the psychological and symbolic landscapes of women’s lives. Raised in a Romanian family and having lived between France and the United Kingdom, her practice is informed by a layered cultural perspective and an ongoing interest in identity, social expectations, and the invisible structures that shape everyday experience. She studied Philosophy, Politics and Economics at the University of Warwick, where her engagement with political thought, ethics, and social theory continues to inform her artistic practice. Alongside this academic background, she further developed her painting through a summer course at the Essential School of Painting in London.
Working primarily in oil, Brandusa constructs allegorical scenes in which figures, animals, objects, and landscapes intertwine. Drawing on mythology, symbolism, and surreal imagery, her paintings explore themes central to women’s lives, including reproductive cycles, desire, labour, and the contradictions of modern womanhood. Natural environments like deserts, gardens, and flowing water often function as metaphors for transformation, endurance, and renewal.
Through layered visual narratives, her work reflects on the pressures placed upon women while reclaiming moments of autonomy, introspection, and quiet resistance.
