Artistic background

After my BA Fine Art Degree (Glasgow School of Art) and MA in Fine Art (Central St Martins) where I was interested in Performance and Photography, I turned my hand to Painting before Lockdown, interested in process as performance and the spaces that these share together.
Art enables me to make intuitive decisions and find solutions naturally. I think therapeutically this activity of making where play is started, worked through and completed is a process where problem solving can be practised. By recognising this sensation, we can learn through it and familiarise ourselves with our ability to trust in a process we may not fully understand and give us the tools to work through and come to conclusions we may not have expected or foreseen. This sense of completion and surprise in the work keeps me engaged and rewarded.
I find painting a malleable medium and responsive to fleeting and gestural expressions allowing for a fresh and fluid approach which I strive to achieve. There is often a moment or moments when a destructive force presents itself and the work can change drastically. This often happens when the work becomes static and stiff. There is a certain tension between creation and destruction and change in the work and for me it's about finding that sweet spot where I think "Yes" and the painting is finished. I'd rather leave a suggestion than have an overworked piece.
Although the work leans into the abstract I am drawn to horizons and this direction leads me to the theme of landscape. The work is not directly representative but at the same time I grew up in Scotland experiencing the beautiful landscapes usually on long drives with my mum and now live near Wanstead flats where the sky scapes are outstanding.
As a creative space I paint open landscapes in conscious play with the process ending in conclusions of subjective beauty.
Sunrises and sunsets attract me as magical moments where the immediacy of the work gives me creative purpose and are meditations on the infinite potential between day and night.
